Brief Description
Direct Support Professionals perform a wide variety of person-centered support services with a strong emphasis on personal choice for individuals with developmental disabilities. These support services involve advocating for, encouraging, guiding, and teaching individuals in expressing personal choices, develop daily living skills and habits, taking care of their personal needs, ensure their health and safety, and maintain a healthy, safe home environment. The supports and services performed depend upon the specific abilities of the individuals being served.
Job Description
- Provide physical and cognitive support to individuals with developmental disabilities to help them lead better lives
- Building and maintaining positive relationships with the individuals
- Engage in mutually respectful partnerships/relationships with the individuals, family members, co-workers, and others
- Support the safety of all individuals in everyday situations
- Teach/assist with feeding, grooming, and care of any pets that may be in a home
- Assist in the development of skills to help the individual meet the productivity expectations of the workplace
- Act as a role model for positive behavior
- Act as bus matron and ensure safe transport of individuals to and from the facility.
- Ensure overall safety and supervision of individuals when out in the community, by following safeguards outlined in life plan and staff action plan.
- Assist individuals with achieving desired valued outcomes and possibly helping them to identify new goals that they would like to work on.
- Supports individuals in achieving optimal health, which may include scheduling and maintaining medical appointments (18 and older), healthy meal planning, and meal preparation/ selection.
- Support individuals with all personal care needs and assist with activities of daily living, which may include providing hands-on assistance.
- Helps individuals with all chores necessary to maintain a normal living environment, i.e., laundry and housekeeping
Must Have
- Minimum of a High School Diploma/ GED Required
- Must have DSP experience caring for individuals with developmental disabilities.
- Must be able to read, write, and comprehend English effectively

- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Must be a positive team player and maintain a positive attitude
- Skills in planning, organizing, problem-solving, and conflict resolution.
Job Type: Full-time

Experience:
- Care Giving: 1 year (Preferred)
